When creating a room, Holly’s inspirations are many—the palaces of India with their astonishingly beautiful stenciled walls; the searing colours of Mexico (where she was so inspired by the native audacity with colour that she bought a vacation house); director Michael Powell’s atmospheric Black Narcissus; the original Granada Television production of Brideshead Revisited, with its wonderful, aristocratic 1920s interiors; English design guru and author Tricia Guild’s often Indian-inspired fabrics, and beautiful wallpapers from Designers Guild; Alice in Wonderland; director Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice; the Bloomsbury Group ; the novels of Japanese cult writer Haruki Murakami as well as those by Edith Wharton, Jhumpa Lahiri and Tolstoy. Her current favourite colour combination—gray and lilac and her best-loved piece of furniture—the divan. ‘It serves a multitude of purposes—one can read on it, sleep on it, watch television, use the computer, even lounge with the dog.’
